Moscow, August 26, 2026 – The Europe Today: CIA Director John Ratcliffe’s unannounced visit to Moscow was aimed at maintaining contacts between the United States and Russian security services, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Wednesday.
Ratcliffe traveled to Moscow on Tuesday for meetings that reportedly lasted around eight hours. According to reports, his trip was not publicly announced in advance, and details surrounding the discussions remained limited.
Peskov told reporters that the visit was conducted for contacts between the two countries’ security services. He added separately that a meeting between Ratcliffe and Russian President Vladimir Putin had not been planned.
The visit has drawn attention amid ongoing tensions between Moscow and Washington and continuing discussions on several international security issues. Ratcliffe’s trip marked the first publicly known visit to Moscow by a CIA director since William Burns traveled to the Russian capital in November 2021. The latest visit also follows previous contacts between Ratcliffe and senior Russian intelligence officials, including a March 2025 telephone conversation with Russian Foreign Intelligence Service chief Sergey Naryshkin.
