Hanoi, August 26, 2026 – The Europe Today: Vietnam successfully defended its ASEAN Championship title after drawing 2-2 with Thailand in the second leg of the final at Mỹ Đình Stadium in Hànội on Wednesday, securing a 4-2 aggregate victory.
Vietnam entered the decisive match with a 2-0 advantage from the first leg in Bangkok. Despite falling behind twice on home soil, the hosts recovered to preserve their aggregate lead and retain the regional title.
Thailand took the lead in the eighth minute when Yotsakorn Burapha found the net with a powerful right-footed effort. Vietnam had an opportunity to equalise early in the second half, but Thailand was awarded a penalty in the 49th minute after Kakana Khamyok was brought down inside the box. However, Kakana sent the spot-kick over the crossbar.
Vietnam capitalised on the reprieve four minutes later, with Hoàng Hên finding the equaliser after his effort rebounded off Thailand goalkeeper Chatchai Bootprom and into the net.
Thailand regained the lead in the 85th minute when substitute Wanchai Jarunongkran scored from close range, leaving the visitors needing another goal to force extra time.
However, Vietnam secured the championship in dramatic fashion in the closing stages. A Thai defensive clearance attempt went into its own net, giving Vietnam a 2-2 draw on the night and a 4-2 aggregate triumph.
The victory marked Vietnam’s fourth ASEAN Championship title, allowing the country to equal Singapore’s record of four regional championships. Vietnam also extended its international unbeaten run to 26 matches.
Vietnamese players and coaching staff celebrated the successful title defence in front of their home supporters at Mỹ Đình Stadium.
In individual awards, Nguyễn Đình Bắc was named Most Valuable Player, Nguyễn Xuân Son received the Top Goalscorer award, while goalkeeper Lê Giang Patrik was recognised as the Best Goalkeeper.
Vietnam will next compete in the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup, scheduled to begin in Jakarta on September 24.
