Rome, October 4, 2026 – The Europe Today: Italy’s Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has allocated €1.55 billion to finance 59 water infrastructure projects across 17 regions under the country’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).

The ministry, in cooperation with Invitalia, has completed the allocation of the entire Water Fund within less than four months, according to a statement reported by the Italian news agency ANSA.

Southern Italy will receive approximately €830 million, representing 53 percent of the total allocation and exceeding the 40 percent minimum share stipulated under the recovery plan.

The public funding is expected to generate an additional €683 million in resources contributed by project beneficiaries, bringing the overall investment activated through the programme to more than €2.2 billion.

The funds will support the development and modernisation of aqueducts, water networks and other infrastructure, with the aim of making Italy’s water systems more modern, secure and efficient.

Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Matteo Salvini welcomed the completion of the funding allocation, highlighting the speed of implementation and the programme’s ability to mobilise additional resources for infrastructure development.

He said the ministry’s priority was now to accelerate the implementation of projects and translate the allocated funds into concrete infrastructure works.

The initiative forms part of Italy’s broader efforts to strengthen water infrastructure and improve the security and reliability of water supplies. Through wider infrastructure programmes, more than €6 billion has already been planned and financed for water-sector projects across Italy.
