Potential Putin-Xi-Trump Trilateral Meeting Could Be Historic, Says Russian Senate Speaker

Beijing, November 2, 2026 – The Europe Today: A potential trilateral meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump would be a historic event, Chairperson of Russia’s Federation Council Valentina Matviyenko has said.

Speaking to reporters in Beijing on November 2, Matviyenko said the possibility of such a meeting and the international community’s expectations were being widely discussed, with considerable interest surrounding the prospect of bringing together the leaders of the three major global powers.

She noted that the leaders of Russia, China and the United States had never previously gathered at the same table, adding that preparations concerning the possible meeting’s agenda and objectives were underway.

However, she clarified that the trilateral meeting had not yet been officially confirmed and remained a possibility.

According to Matviyenko, the international community expects the three leaders to deliver important messages, particularly reaffirming that nuclear war is unacceptable.

She expressed hope that the meeting, if held, would produce positive signals and help ease international tensions. She also voiced concern over what she described as escalating tensions being fuelled by European countries.

Matviyenko said she would closely monitor developments, emphasising the importance of the upcoming bilateral meeting between Presidents Putin and Xi.

She further noted that the United States was scheduled to hold its midterm congressional elections on November 3, adding that developments before the elections could influence decision-making regarding the proposed trilateral engagement.

Concluding her remarks, the Federation Council chairperson stressed that the final decision rested with the offices of the three presidents and that the meeting could only be considered officially scheduled once all three sides confirmed it.
