China Backs Kazakhstan’s Bid to Join BRICS, Xi Jinping Announces

Astana, July 04, 2024, The Europe Today: Chinese President Xi Jinping has expressed China’s support for Kazakhstan’s accession to BRICS during high-level talks with Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev in Astana on Wednesday, according to Kazakh media.

Strengthening Bilateral and Multilateral Cooperation

Following their discussions, President Xi emphasized the importance of continued close cooperation between China and Kazakhstan within various international frameworks, including the United Nations (UN), the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and the China-Central Asia format.

“China supports Kazakhstan’s accession to BRICS, as one of the Middle Powers, to play a growing role and contribute to global affairs and management,” Xi stated. He highlighted the historical partnership between the two nations, noting their foundational roles in establishing the SCO.

Praise for Kazakhstan’s SCO Leadership

President Xi praised Kazakhstan’s significant contributions to the SCO, especially during its presidency, which he believes has promoted cooperation and development within the organization. “I would like to praise the tangible contribution of Kazakhstan’s presidency in promoting the original cooperation and development of the SCO activity,” Xi said.

Optimism for the Future

Xi also expressed confidence in the success of the upcoming SCO summit in Astana, predicting it will enhance the organization’s activities. “There is no doubt, tomorrow’s Astana summit will be a success and propel the SCO activity to a new height,” he remarked.

The support from China for Kazakhstan’s BRICS membership bid underscores the deepening strategic partnership between the two countries and their shared commitment to strengthening regional and global cooperation.
