President Sadyr Japarov Calls for Renewed Multilateral Cooperation at UN Summit of the Future

New York, September 22, 2024 – The Europe Today: Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov delivered a compelling address at the Summit of the Future, held as part of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. His speech emphasized the need for a renewed approach to multilateral cooperation in order to confront global challenges and secure a sustainable future for the next generations.

“In this era of global change, we must review past methods of cooperation and take measures that not only address current challenges but also lay a solid foundation for the well-being of future generations,” President Japarov stated. He called upon member states to contribute to the replenishment of the World Bank’s International Development Association (IDA) and other development funds that play a critical role in supporting low-income countries.

Japarov highlighted the IDA’s importance in assisting developing nations by reducing poverty, fostering infrastructure development, and enhancing resilience to global threats. He also endorsed the “SDG Stimulus to Deliver Agenda 2030,” introduced by the UN Secretary-General in February 2023, which proposes tackling high debt costs, scaling up long-term development financing, and establishing crisis-response mechanisms.

Addressing global challenges, the President stressed the urgency of taking swift action to combat forced migration, climate change, and the inequitable distribution of resources. “We need to act decisively – we don’t have time to wait. The Kyrgyz Republic is ready to contribute to this cause,” he affirmed, expressing support for the Pact for the Future and the Declaration on Future Generations.

Japarov noted Kyrgyzstan’s progress in eradicating extreme poverty, advancing infrastructure and digitalization, and transitioning to a green economy. “Our experience has shown that with the right vision and political will, even small countries with limited resources can achieve significant progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals,” he concluded.

The summit brought together world leaders to discuss innovative solutions for the future, and President Japarov’s address reinforced Kyrgyzstan’s commitment to global cooperation and sustainable development.
