Washington, D.C., December 7, 2024 – The Europe Today: The United States Department of State has issued an urgent call for all U.S. citizens to leave Syria immediately due to the ongoing volatile security situation and active clashes between armed groups across the country.
In a statement released on December 7, 2024, the Department of State highlighted the unpredictability of the conflict, urging citizens to take advantage of remaining commercial flight options available in Damascus to ensure their safe departure.
“U.S. citizens who choose not to depart Syria or are unable to do so should prepare contingency plans for emergency situations and be ready to shelter in place for extended periods,” the statement read. It also noted the closure of Aleppo International Airport, further complicating evacuation efforts.
The Department of State emphasized that routine and emergency consular services are unavailable as the U.S. Embassy in Damascus has been closed since 2012. The Czech Republic currently acts as the protecting power for U.S. interests in Syria.
In cases where U.S. citizens in Syria cannot reach the U.S. Interests Section at the Czech Embassy, they are advised to contact the U.S. Embassy in Amman, Jordan, for emergency assistance.
This advisory reflects the escalating instability in Syria and the challenges faced by foreign nationals in accessing safe passage. The U.S. government continues to monitor the situation closely while prioritizing the safety of its citizens.
