Canberra, August 11, 2025 – The Europe Today: Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Monday announced that Australia will formally recognize a Palestinian state, joining the ranks of leaders from France, Britain, and Canada who have expressed similar intentions.
The announcement follows weeks of calls from within his Cabinet and from various segments of Australian society urging the government to take this step, amid increasing criticism from officials over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, including widespread suffering and starvation.
Australia’s government has also voiced strong opposition to recently announced plans by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for a large-scale military offensive in Gaza, according to media reports.
Speaking to reporters after a Cabinet meeting, Albanese confirmed that the recognition will be formalized during the United Nations General Assembly in September. He emphasized that the decision was “predicated on commitments Australia has received from the Palestinian Authority.”
