Paris, October 6, 2025 – The Europe Today: The first part of France’s new government, proposed by Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, has been approved by President Emmanuel Macron and formally announced on Sunday, marking a key step in the formation of a new cabinet nearly one month after the resignation of the previous government.

The Secretary General of the Presidency, Emmanuel Moulin, publicly unveiled the list of ministers from the steps of the Élysée Palace, according to French media reports.

Among the most notable appointments is the selection of Bruno Le Maire, the former Minister of Economy and Finance, as Minister of Defense. Le Maire, who served as France’s finance chief from 2017 to 2024, previously held the positions of Minister of Agriculture (2009–2012) and Secretary of State for European Affairs (2008–2009). Following his resignation in 2024, he briefly pursued an academic career as a lecturer at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland.

Several key ministers will retain their portfolios, signaling continuity in core areas of governance.

  • Bruno Retailleau, from the Republican Party, will continue as Minister of the Interior.
  • Jean-Noël Barrot will remain Minister of Foreign Affairs.
  • Gérald Darmanin, a close ally of President Macron, will stay on as Minister of Justice.

Additionally, Rachida Dati (Minister of Culture), Catherine Vautrin (Minister of Health), and Annie Genevard (Minister of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty) will continue in their current posts.

The announcement represents the first phase of Prime Minister Lecornu’s efforts to form a cohesive and balanced cabinet following weeks of political negotiations. Further ministerial appointments are expected in the coming days as the new French government begins to take shape.
