Trinidad and Tobago Solidarity Groups Deliver Aid to Cuba, Condemn U.S. Blockade

Trinidad and Tobago

Trinidad and Tobago, May 23, 2026 – The Europe Today: Representatives of thirteen political and social organizations in Trinidad and Tobago delivered a humanitarian donation to the Embassy of Cuba in Port of Spain on May 20, as part of a solidarity campaign launched on March 1 in support of the Cuban people.

The initiative brought together solidarity organizations from Trinidad and Tobago as well as the Friends of the Cuban People Group in Dominica, which contributed medical supplies and materials intended for Cuba’s Isle of Youth.

Speaking on behalf of the participating organizations, political leader David Abdulah of the Movement for Social Justice outlined the supplies collected during the campaign and described the donation as a gesture of gratitude toward Cuba for its longstanding solidarity with Caribbean nations and peoples around the world.

Abdulah strongly criticized the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba and condemned the tightening of sanctions, particularly energy-related restrictions introduced on January 29 through an executive order by the current U.S. administration and later expanded through additional measures announced on May 1.

He called for the complete lifting of the blockade and rejected any attempt at military aggression against Cuba.

Abdulah also stressed that Cuba is not a failed state and noted that despite the difficulties created by sanctions, the country continues to extend humanitarian assistance and solidarity to nations across the world.

Referring to a recent statement by the Cuban Revolutionary Government, Abdulah condemned accusations directed at Raúl Castro, saying the allegations represented another attempt by the U.S. government to intimidate Cuba and create a pretext for possible military action.

In a statement delivered during the event, the solidarity group from Dominica also denounced the blockade imposed on Cuba and reaffirmed support for the Cuban people.

Cuban Ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago Gustavo Véliz Olivares thanked the solidarity organizations from both countries for their continued support and briefed attendees on the impact of energy restrictions on Cuba, particularly in sensitive sectors such as public healthcare.

Véliz Olivares also condemned what he described as disinformation and manipulation campaigns aimed at justifying possible military aggression against Cuba. He reiterated that Cuba poses no military threat to the United States and rejected claims being used to legitimize potential intervention.

The ambassador reaffirmed Cuba’s commitment to defending its sovereignty and promoting peace, highlighting the declaration of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace adopted during the Second CELAC Summit held in Havana in 2014.

The solidarity event received broad media coverage across Trinidad and Tobago, including reports by the Guardian Group and CNC3 television network.
