Berlin, August 19, 2024, The Europe Today: Germany’s national football team captain, Ilkay Gündogan, announced his retirement from international football on Monday, marking the end of a distinguished career with the national team. The 33-year-old midfielder leaves behind a legacy after earning 82 caps for Germany.
Gündogan made the announcement via a post on X, where he reflected on his decision to retire from international duties. “After a few weeks of reflection, I have come to the decision that it is time to end my national team career,” Gündogan stated.
Having made his debut for Germany in October 2011 against Belgium, Gündogan’s international career was marked by both triumphs and challenges. While he missed the 2014 World Cup victory due to a back injury, he remained a pivotal figure for the team in subsequent years. “I can look back with great pride on 82 caps for my home country — a number I could never have dreamed of when I made my debut for the senior national team in 2011,” he reflected.
Recently, Gündogan had the honor of captaining Germany during the European Football Championships hosted by the nation. He described the experience as a “huge honor” and expressed his satisfaction in being able to contribute to the team’s success. “After all those years, we finally managed to make the nation proud again — I’m very happy that I was able to play a part in that,” he said.
The German Football Federation (DFB) expressed its gratitude to Gündogan for his years of service, highlighting his leadership and camaraderie within the team. “We will miss you as our captain and teammate. As our friend, you always had a secure place in the team. Thank you for everything, Illy,” the DFB said in a statement.
Gündogan’s retirement marks the end of an era for Germany’s national team, as they bid farewell to a player who consistently brought skill, dedication, and leadership to the pitch.
