Bangkok, August 24, 2024, The Europe Today: Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra firmly rejected allegations that her father, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, is exerting control over her and the newly formed government. The Prime Minister addressed these concerns on Friday, following Thaksin’s participation in the “Vision for Thailand 2024” event on Thursday, where he proposed measures to revitalize the country’s sluggish economy.
Speaking to the press, Prime Minister Paetongtarn clarified that Thaksin’s suggestions during the event do not represent official government policy. “He was not declaring the government’s policy. He only expressed his vision. What he said was partly drawn from Pheu Thai’s policy,” she stated, emphasizing that Thaksin does not hold any formal position within the government.
When questioned about the criticism that her father might be exercising undue influence over her and the administration, Ms. Paetongtarn responded decisively: “I insist he is not trying to dominate. I can think for myself.” She acknowledged, however, that Thaksin’s extensive experience in managing economic affairs could be beneficial to the nation, especially as the new government works to address economic challenges.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn also reiterated that the government’s official policy will be clearly outlined when it is formally presented to parliament. She affirmed that the Pheu Thai Party’s flagship digital wallet handout policy, which aims to distribute 10,000 baht to around 50 million eligible Thais, is likely to proceed. The scheme, initially proposed under former Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, may see revisions to target vulnerable groups through cash distributions via the welfare card.
On Friday, the Prime Minister also held discussions with key representatives from the private sector, including the Thai Chamber of Commerce, the Federation of Thai Industries, the Thai Bankers’ Association, and the Thai-Chinese Chamber of Commerce. The private sector presented a series of proposals aimed at stimulating the economy and addressing the country’s pressing economic issues.
Sanan Angubolkul, Chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, outlined several urgent economic measures, including the rapid decentralization of the 2024 budget to all regions and timely planning of the 2025 budget. He also called for increased purchasing power for vulnerable groups, the introduction of new subsidy schemes, and initiatives to stimulate spending among wealthier citizens through tax incentives.
Mr. Sanan further urged the government to implement strategies to curb electricity and oil prices, maintain price caps on essential goods, and enhance the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises. He emphasized the need for a national strategy focused on sustainable growth.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn expressed her commitment to considering the private sector’s proposals, assuring that once her cabinet is finalized, these suggestions will be pursued and translated into actionable policies.
