Thailand and China Strengthen Ties as Premier Li Qiang Accepts Invitation to Visit

Beijing, February 9, 2025 – The Europe Today: Chinese Premier Li Qiang has accepted an invitation to visit Thailand this year as both nations seek to enhance cooperation in key future industries, including electric vehicles and artificial intelligence.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra concluded her official visit to China on Saturday, marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The visit aimed to reinforce the Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership, expand collaboration across multiple sectors, and lay the groundwork for the next 50 years of mutual development.

During her visit, Paetongtarn met with President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Qiang, and Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress Zhao Leji. Their discussions covered a wide range of topics, including economic cooperation, technological innovation, environmental concerns, and security issues.

A major focus of the visit was the commitment to advancing the second phase of Thailand’s high-speed rail project, which will connect Nakhon Ratchasima province to Nong Khai, spanning 357 kilometers. The project, expected to be completed in 2032, is seen as a critical link in regional trade and cross-border travel to Laos and China.

Thailand reaffirmed its support for the One-China Policy, underscoring its stance on China’s territorial integrity, including issues related to Taiwan. Both countries also agreed to collaborate on addressing global challenges such as climate change, regional security, and cybercrime.

In a recent Facebook post, Paetongtarn highlighted agreements to enhance cooperation in key sectors, including electric vehicles, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, the digital economy, nuclear technology, green energy, finance, trade, and investment. Additionally, both nations pledged to tackle PM2.5 pollution and strengthen efforts to combat transnational crime.

As part of her visit, Paetongtarn extended an invitation to Premier Li to visit Thailand in honor of the milestone year in bilateral relations, which he gladly accepted.

Another highlight of the visit was Thailand’s participation in the opening ceremony of the 9th Asian Winter Games in Harbin, where the country expressed appreciation for China’s role in hosting the event. Thailand also reaffirmed its support for China’s global initiatives, including the Belt and Road Initiative, and committed to deepening cooperation in agriculture, biotechnology, and healthcare.

In a symbolic gesture of goodwill, China agreed to send a pair of giant pandas to Thailand, continuing the tradition of panda diplomacy and strengthening the enduring friendship between the two nations.
