Indonesia Implements Strategic Measures to Enhance Teacher Quality: Minister Abdul Mu’ti

Palembang, November 2, 2024 – The Europe Today: Indonesia’s Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Abdul Mu’ti, outlined three strategic measures aimed at enhancing the quality of teachers in order to ensure top-notch education and develop outstanding human resources. The announcement was made during the launch of National Teachers Month in Palembang, South Sumatra, on Friday.

“Technological advancements cannot replace the position and role of teachers as agents of learning and enlightening the nation,” Minister Mu’ti emphasized, underlining the irreplaceable impact of teachers on education.

The first measure involves supporting teachers in obtaining bachelor’s degrees through scholarships and educational assistance programs. “Not all teachers in Indonesia hold a bachelor’s degree,” Mu’ti noted, stressing the importance of academic qualifications in boosting teaching standards.

The second initiative focuses on enhancing teacher competencies in four key areas: academic, pedagogical, social, and moral skills. To achieve this, the ministry is refining the Teacher Professional Education (PPG) program. This includes adding value education and counseling components to better prepare future educators. “This is part of our efforts to improve teachers’ competency,” Mu’ti affirmed.

The third measure addresses teacher welfare, a factor the minister considers essential for improving the quality of education. He reiterated his ministry’s dedication to uplifting teachers’ welfare, recognizing its significant impact on teaching effectiveness.

Mu’ti concluded by emphasizing the far-reaching impact of these initiatives. “By focusing on these three aspects, we will produce quality teachers who will enhance the quality of learning and, ultimately, strengthen our human resources. Great teachers lead to quality education, and quality education determines the strength of our nation’s human resources,” he stated.

The measures reflect the government’s commitment to prioritizing education as a cornerstone for national development and empowering teachers as pivotal drivers of educational progress.
