Wang Yi Calls for Global Cooperation to Advance Human Rights at Hangzhou Dialogue

Hangzhou, December 9, 2024 – The Europe Today: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized the need for global solidarity to promote human rights through development and cooperation in a written message to the Hernán Santa Cruz Dialogue on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights on Monday. The dialogue, co-organized by China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, convened in Hangzhou with participants from various nations and organizations.

Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, addressed the gathering amid a backdrop of rising global tensions, sluggish economic recovery, and increasing gaps in human rights governance. He called for enhanced efforts to ensure equal access to economic, social, and cultural rights for all, underlining the importance of multilateralism and respecting countries’ sovereignty in choosing their paths for human rights development.

“To realize human rights for all, we must uphold true multilateralism, respect each nation’s independent choice of human rights development path, and foster dialogue and cooperation based on equality and mutual respect,” Wang stated. He stressed the need for stronger global solidarity, particularly through support from developed countries to developing nations, ensuring that no one is left behind.

Wang highlighted China’s achievements in human rights, noting that the country has prioritized a people-centered approach and developed a unique model for human rights suited to its national context. He pointed to historic progress in safeguarding economic, social, and cultural rights, asserting that China’s practices provide a valuable reference for other nations.

The foreign minister also lauded the outcomes of the third plenary session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, held in July. He described it as a pivotal moment in advancing Chinese modernization, creating favorable conditions for further reforms and enhancing the equal enjoyment of economic, social, and cultural rights by Chinese citizens.

In his closing remarks, Wang reiterated China’s commitment to working with all countries and UN agencies to champion the common values of humanity. He advocated for safeguarding human rights through security, promoting them through development, and advancing them through cooperation.

“China remains dedicated to contributing to the sound and sustainable development of the global human rights cause,” he concluded.
