Severe Winter Storm Hits Germany with Heavy Snow, Black Ice, and Freezing Rain

Berlin, January 5, 2025 – The Europe Today: Large parts of Germany are bracing for heavy snow, black ice, freezing rain, and strong winds as severe winter weather is expected to hit the country overnight on Saturday and into Sunday, according to the German Meteorological Service (DWD).

This wintry weather is partly attributed to a low-pressure system that has already caused significant disruption in the United Kingdom.

Germany’s national carrier, Lufthansa, has issued warnings about possible flight disruptions in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland due to the extreme weather conditions. Frankfurt Airport, the country’s largest flight hub, is anticipating flight cancellations and delays, as announced by its operator Fraport on its website.

Heavy Snowfall and Black Ice Expected
The DWD has warned of black ice, particularly in areas between the Black Forest, Lake Constance, and the Bavarian Forest. Black ice poses a significant risk to road users as it is difficult to detect and extremely slippery.

Western low mountain ranges are expected to experience snowfall overnight, with accumulations of up to ten centimeters (4 inches) within just a few hours before transitioning into freezing rain. Temperatures in some regions are forecast to plummet to -8°C (17.6°F), while strong winds reaching up to 100 kph are predicted in mountainous areas.
