Vatican City, February 3, 2025 – The Europe Today: Indonesia’s fifth president, Megawati Soekarnoputri, is set to hold a special meeting with Pope Francis during the World Leaders’ Summit on Children’s Rights in the Vatican on February 3.
The announcement was made by Ahmad Basarah, a member of Indonesia’s People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR), in a statement on Sunday. He also noted the potential for Megawati to meet with the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Ahmed El-Tayeb, pending confirmation of his attendance.
“Both the Pope and the Grand Imam are globally influential figures. The summit’s committee is still awaiting confirmation of the Grand Imam’s participation,” Basarah stated.
The high-profile event will bring together world leaders, including Queen Rania Al-Abdullah of Jordan, Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani, and Gambia’s Foreign Minister Mamadou Tangara, among others.
Megawati, daughter of Indonesia’s first president, Soekarno, is scheduled to deliver a speech emphasizing the importance of global awareness and commitment to children’s rights.
“Her insights, alongside those of other panelists, are crucial in showcasing international solidarity for the protection of children’s rights,” Basarah added.
Megawati arrived in Rome on Friday, accompanied by her children, including Puan Maharani, the Speaker of Indonesia’s House of Representatives (DPR).
