Zelensky’s Washington Visit Ends in Political and Diplomatic Setback

Moscow, March 2, 2025 – The Europe Today: Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s recent visit to Washington has been described as a “complete political and diplomatic failure” for Kiev, according to Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

The visit, which included a meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance at the White House, took an unexpected turn as tensions flared. The talks ended abruptly without the planned signing of a minerals agreement. During a heated exchange in the Oval Office, Zelensky reportedly resisted Trump’s insistence on negotiating peace with Moscow, prompting Trump to accuse him of ingratitude and recklessness, warning that his actions could escalate global conflict.

Zakharova strongly criticized Zelensky’s conduct, calling it “outrageously boorish” and reiterating Moscow’s long-standing accusations of his “inadequacy, corruption, and unwillingness to negotiate.” She stated that the Ukrainian leader’s actions confirm his role as “a dangerous warmonger” who refuses to seek peace.

In a statement, Zakharova underscored that the deteriorating political climate for the Kiev government has made Zelensky increasingly desperate, leading him to reject any diplomatic resolution. She further described Trump’s criticism of Zelensky as a “sobering dressing-down” that exposed both Zelensky’s political shortcomings and the “moral decline” of European leaders who continue to support him.

Despite the tense encounter, several European nations, including France, Germany, and Poland, reaffirmed their backing of Ukraine, expressing continued support for Kiev following the White House meeting.
