Presidents Xi Jinping and Gabriel Boric Reaffirm Strategic Partnership

Beijing, May 15, 2025 – The Europe Today: Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Chilean President Gabriel Boric in Beijing on Wednesday, as President Boric attended the fourth ministerial meeting of the China-CELAC (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States) Forum. The meeting underscored the strengthening of ties between China and Chile, marking the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

President Xi highlighted the historical significance of the bilateral relationship, noting that China and Chile have long maintained a comprehensive strategic partnership based on mutual respect and shared development goals. He called for both countries to further enrich this partnership by setting a model for China-Latin America cooperation and a beacon of South-South collaboration, while jointly promoting global peace and progress.

“China stands ready to work with Chile to consolidate political mutual trust, deepen governance experience exchanges, and firmly support each other on issues concerning our core interests and development priorities,” Xi stated.

Emphasizing economic and technological cooperation, President Xi urged the two sides to fully implement the Belt and Road Initiative cooperation plan. He proposed expanding collaboration in areas such as agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry, fisheries, industrial investment, infrastructure development, and the green minerals sector. Xi also identified emerging areas of growth including astronomy, polar science, artificial intelligence, biomedicine, and the digital economy.

President Xi encouraged more Chinese enterprises to invest and conduct business in Chile, while inviting a greater volume of high-quality Chilean products into the Chinese market. He also called for enhanced cultural, educational, media, and youth exchanges to deepen mutual understanding between the peoples of both nations.

“As staunch supporters of multilateralism and free trade, China and Chile should further strengthen their cooperation in global governance and safeguard the common interests of the Global South,” Xi added.

President Boric, in turn, expressed appreciation for China’s role as Chile’s largest trading partner and affirmed Chile’s unwavering adherence to the one-China principle. He welcomed broader cooperation with China in trade, investment, and frontier technologies such as artificial intelligence.

Boric also reiterated Chile’s support for high-quality Belt and Road cooperation and emphasized the importance of fostering people-to-people and cultural ties. “All countries should uphold free trade, mutual benefit, and win-win cooperation. Trade must serve the collective interests of the global community, not the unilateral goals of individual nations,” he remarked, warning against the futility of trade wars.

The Chilean President affirmed that both countries are committed to upholding multilateralism, the authority of the United Nations, and the peaceful resolution of international disputes. He said Chile is ready to work closely with China to defend international fairness and justice.

During President Boric’s visit, China and Chile signed multiple cooperation agreements covering a wide range of areas including economy and trade, publishing, inspection and quarantine, media, and think tank collaboration, further deepening their strategic ties.
