Dushanbe, July 19, 2026 – The Europe Today: President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon has appointed Sharifkhon Nurahmad Safarzoda as the new Chairman of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO), following the death of the region’s former head, Alisher Khudoberdi Mirzonabot.

According to presidential decrees issued on July 18, 2026, President Rahmon formally relieved Mirzonabot of his duties as Chairman of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region due to his passing. The decision was made in accordance with Article 69 of the Constitution of the Republic of Tajikistan.

In a separate decree signed the same day, the President appointed Sharifkhon Nurahmad Safarzoda as the new Chairman of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region, also pursuant to Article 69 of the Constitution.
