Tokyo, November 1, 2026 – The Europe Today: Russian tennis star Diana Shnaider has secured a place in the final of the 2026 WTA Toray Pan Pacific Open after defeating Slovakia’s Mia Pohankova in the semifinal in Tokyo.
The third-seeded Shnaider, competing under a neutral status at international tournaments, defeated Pohankova 6-4, 7-6 (7-0) in a match lasting one hour and 46 minutes, according to TASS.
Speaking in her on-court interview, Shnaider said reaching the final was a special achievement, particularly given the challenges of competing at the highest level.
“It’s never easy on this stage, one step away from the final,” she said, according to the official WTA website.
Praising her 18-year-old opponent, Shnaider described Pohankova as a special talent with a promising future. She added that she was particularly pleased to reach the first final of her season in Tokyo.
In the final, Shnaider will face Canada’s Leylah Fernandez, who booked her place in the title clash after defeating Uzbekistan’s Kamila Rakhimova 7-5, 6-3.
Commenting on her upcoming encounter with Shnaider, Fernandez acknowledged the Russian player’s strong performance, recalling that she had also defeated her in their previous meeting three weeks earlier.
Fernandez expressed satisfaction with her own performance, particularly her ability to remain composed and draw energy from the crowd.
Shnaider, 22, is currently ranked 13th in the WTA rankings and has won five WTA singles titles. Her best Grand Slam performance came at the 2026 French Open, where she reached the semifinals.
She also won a silver medal in women’s doubles at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, partnering with fellow Russian tennis player Mirra Andreeva.
The 2026 Toray Pan Pacific Open, a WTA 500 tournament played on outdoor hard courts, is the 52nd edition of the prestigious Pan Pacific Open. The competition is being held at the Ariake Coliseum in Tokyo from October 26 to November 1, with total prize money of US$1.2 million. Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic is the defending champion.
Russian Players Competing Under Neutral Status
Russian and Belarusian tennis players have competed under neutral status in international tournaments following restrictions introduced by international sports organizations in 2022.
On February 28, 2022, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) issued recommendations to international sports federations to exclude athletes from Russia and Belarus from international competitions.
Subsequently, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) suspended the membership of the Russian and Belarusian national tennis federations on March 1, 2022, and cancelled previously scheduled tournaments in both countries.
On March 14, 2022, the ITF also confirmed that Russian and Belarusian national teams would not participate in the 2022 Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup competitions.
