Democrats Secure Control of Both Chambers of US Congress in Sweeping Midterm Victory

Democrats

Washington, November 5, 2026, The Europe Today: The Democratic Party has secured control of both the US Senate and House of Representatives in a sweeping victory in the 2026 midterm elections, marking a major political setback for President Donald Trump and his Republican Party.

The results represent a significant shift in the American political landscape, as Democratic candidates registered historic victories in traditionally Republican strongholds, reflecting widespread voter dissatisfaction with the Trump administration’s policies and leadership.

According to Reuters, Democrats made substantial gains across the country, including in Texas, Kansas and South Carolina, where Republican candidates had maintained strong electoral support for generations.

The electoral setback was attributed largely to public frustration over the prolonged war with Iran, rising living costs, economic concerns, trade tariffs and allegations of corruption involving the administration.

In a historic breakthrough, Democrats secured a Senate seat in Kansas for the first time in nearly a century. In Texas, they also achieved major victories, winning a Senate seat and defeating Republican Governor Greg Abbott.

The results are expected to usher in a new era of divided government in Washington, with Democrats preparing to exercise greater oversight over the Trump administration.

Democratic leaders have indicated that the party will use its newly secured congressional majorities to investigate the administration’s policies, government operations and the business activities of Trump’s family and political associates. The Democratic-controlled Senate will also have the authority to block presidential nominations, including appointments to senior government positions and federal judicial posts.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer described the election results as a generational transformation of the political landscape, saying American voters had demanded change and that Democrats now had a responsibility to deliver.

Exit polling indicated that a significant proportion of voters viewed the midterm elections as an opportunity to express dissatisfaction with President Trump. Around half of those surveyed said they wanted to rebuke the president, while approximately 70 percent supported stronger congressional checks and balances on presidential authority.

President Trump acknowledged the Republican losses in an interview with Fox News, congratulating Democrats on their campaign performance and expressing willingness to work with the opposition on certain issues. However, he warned that he would veto legislation he considered unacceptable.

The election also produced several historic milestones, with Democratic candidates making significant gains in gubernatorial and congressional contests across the country.

The outcome is expected to reshape Washington’s political dynamics, intensify congressional scrutiny of the administration and influence the political environment ahead of the 2028 presidential election.

The results mark one of the most consequential midterm setbacks for a sitting US president in recent political history, significantly weakening Republican control over the federal legislative agenda.
