Beijing, May 30, 2024, The Europe Today: China’s State Council has unveiled an ambitious action plan for energy conservation and carbon reduction for the years 2024-25. The plan aims to cut energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP by approximately 2.5 percent and 3.9 percent, respectively, in 2024.
According to the plan, energy consumption per unit of added value of industrial enterprises above the designated size will be reduced by around 3.5 percent this year. Additionally, the proportion of non-fossil energy consumption is expected to reach around 18.9 percent in 2024 and 20 percent in 2025.
The plan highlights significant transformations in key sectors and industries over the next two years, projected to result in a reduction of approximately 50 million tonnes of standard coal and a decrease in carbon dioxide emissions by around 130 million tonnes.
This initiative is part of China’s broader commitment to its “dual carbon” goal, which includes peaking carbon emissions by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060.
By setting these targets, China continues to demonstrate its dedication to addressing climate change and promoting sustainable development. The action plan is expected to contribute significantly to global efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating the impacts of climate change.
