Ugandan Olympic Athlete Rebecca Cheptegei Dies After Tragic Attack in Kenya

Kampala, September 05, 2024, The Europe Today: Rebecca Cheptegei, a celebrated Ugandan Olympic marathon runner, has tragically passed away after being set on fire by her boyfriend in Kenya. This information was confirmed by Donald Rukare, Chief of the Uganda Olympic Committee, on Thursday.

“We have learnt of the sad passing of our Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei … following a vicious attack by her boyfriend,” Rukare announced in a statement on X. He described the incident as a “cowardly and senseless act” and highlighted that Cheptegei’s legacy would continue to endure despite the tragedy.

Cheptegei, 33, suffered severe burns covering 80% of her body, according to the acting head of the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital where she was receiving treatment. A medic at the hospital reported that all her organs failed late last night, leading to her untimely death.

According to police reports, Cheptegei’s partner allegedly doused her with petrol and set her alight during an attack at her residence on Sunday.

The Uganda Athletics Federation also expressed profound sorrow over the loss. “We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei, who tragically fell victim to domestic violence,” the federation said in a statement on X. “As a federation, we condemn such acts and call for justice. May her soul rest in peace.”

Cheptegei had recently competed in the women’s marathon at the Paris Olympics last month, showcasing her remarkable talent on the global stage. Her death has cast a shadow over the athletics community, with calls for justice and reflections on the devastating impact of domestic violence.
