Azerbaijan and COP29 Sign Memorandum on Security Cooperation

Baku, October 16, 2024 – The Europe Today: A significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on security cooperation has been signed between the Government of Azerbaijan and the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29), NHC reports. The announcement was made on COP29’s official social media page on platform X.

The MoU was signed in Baku during the Pre-COP29 meeting, a preparatory session for the main conference. The document establishes a framework for security cooperation during COP29 and lays the groundwork for continued collaboration beyond the event itself.

COP29, the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), is scheduled to take place in Baku from November 11 to 22, 2024. The event is expected to draw between 70,000 to 80,000 international participants, transforming Azerbaijan’s capital into a global center for climate discussions.

The United Nations Climate Change Conference is the principal platform for climate negotiations under the UNFCCC, the Kyoto Protocol, and the Paris Agreement. Originating in 1995 as a small working session, these conferences have since grown into some of the largest international forums addressing global climate challenges.

Azerbaijan’s commitment to hosting a secure and successful COP29 is reinforced through this agreement, which highlights the country’s collaboration with international partners in ensuring a safe environment for the landmark event.

The decision to host COP29 in Baku was confirmed during the COP28 plenary session held in Dubai on December 11, 2023. As a result, Baku is set to play a key role in global climate action efforts.

The UNFCCC, established at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, aims to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. COP, short for the “Conference of the Parties,” serves as the highest decision-making body responsible for overseeing the implementation of the UNFCCC agreements.
