Plains, December 30, 2024 – The Europe Today: Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, a tireless advocate for peace, human rights, and humanitarian efforts, passed away peacefully at his home in Plains, Georgia, on Sunday, the Carter Center announced. He was 100.
Carter, who had been in hospice care since February 2023, spent his final moments surrounded by family in the small town where he was born, raised, and once ran a peanut farm before embarking on a distinguished political career.
In a statement, his son Chip Carter described his father as “a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love.”
As the 39th president of the United States from 1977 to 1981, Carter’s legacy includes his instrumental role in establishing formal diplomatic relations between the United States and China on January 1, 1979, a landmark achievement that reshaped global politics.
Carter, a devout Christian and U.S. Navy veteran, became the oldest living former U.S. president and the nation’s longest-lived leader. This milestone was particularly remarkable given his 2015 battle with brain cancer, which he overcame to lead a fruitful and impactful post-presidency dedicated to global humanitarian work.
The Carter Center, founded in 1982, served as a platform for his commitment to conflict resolution, public health, and democratic governance worldwide, solidifying his reputation as a champion for humanity.
Carter’s enduring legacy will be remembered by those who valued his unwavering dedication to peace and his profound contributions to both domestic and international affairs. A memorial service is expected to be announced in the coming days.
