Vietnam Demonstrates Active Engagement at 58th Session of UN Human Rights Council

Geneva, April 5, 2025 – The Europe Today: The 58th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) concluded in Geneva on April 4, highlighting Vietnam’s active participation and substantive contributions throughout the six-week gathering.

A total of 32 resolutions were adopted during the session, alongside the successful completion of the fourth-cycle Universal Periodic Review (UPR) procedures for 13 countries.

As part of its proactive engagement, Vietnam led the drafting and presentation of a joint statement focused on promoting the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to achieve gender equality. The initiative received widespread support from numerous countries. The statement underscored the importance of fully and swiftly advancing the SDGs, with a particular focus on enhancing women and girls’ participation in decision-making processes, encouraging female leadership in science and technology, ensuring equal involvement in peace and security processes, and increasing resources and capacity to integrate gender considerations in policymaking.

The Vietnamese delegation also actively participated in bilateral meetings, multilateral discussions, and thematic consultations. It contributed to the drafting of key documents, co-sponsored various initiatives grounded in dialogue and cooperation, and co-authored a joint speech that garnered the backing of 65 countries.

These activities reflected Vietnam’s consistent stance and policies on promoting and protecting human rights, and its commitment to ensuring that the work of the UNHRC aligns with the foundational principles of international law.

Throughout the session, the Vietnamese delegation delivered speeches at various thematic discussions covering a wide range of issues including labour rights and social security in the informal economy, children’s rights, responses to HIV, cultural rights, the right to food, the rights of persons with disabilities, and the situation in Palestine and other occupied Arab territories.

In its statements, Vietnam reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to human rights for all citizens, shared its efforts to safeguard the rights of vulnerable groups, and called for bridging political divides through constructive dialogue and trust-building, in line with the UN Charter and international legal norms.

The delegation also collaborated with other ASEAN member states to deliver joint statements on issues of common concern, notably technical cooperation and capacity building.

Vietnam’s active role in the 58th session of the UNHRC reflects its deep commitment and sense of responsibility as it concludes the final year of its 2023–2025 membership term. These efforts also serve as a strong foundation for the country’s candidacy for the 2026–2028 term on the Council.
