Indonesia and Brazil Discuss Strategic Urban Resilience Collaboration at BRICS Forum

Brasília, July 1, 2025 – The Europe Today: Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development of Indonesia, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY), has proposed the establishment of an Urban Resilience Task Force as a platform under South-South Cooperation to support pilot projects focused on climate-adaptive urban planning and nature-based solutions.

The proposal was put forward during a bilateral meeting with Brazil’s Minister of Urban Affairs, H.E. Jader Barbalho, on the sidelines of the BRICS Urbanization Forum agenda series in Brasília, Brazil.

“In our meeting, we discussed the potential for concrete cooperation between Indonesia and Brazil in promoting inclusive, climate-resilient, and sustainable infrastructure development,” AHY stated in an official press release issued from Jakarta on June 30.

He emphasized the shared characteristics and challenges faced by both countries — particularly in terms of biodiversity and their mutual commitment to the global climate agenda. “We are exploring further collaboration, including knowledge exchange on social housing, regional connectivity, and nature-based urban resilience,” AHY added.

Minister AHY also commended Brazil’s national housing initiative Minha Casa Minha Vida, which provides affordable and resilient housing solutions for low-income communities. Indonesia expressed its interest in learning from this experience and holding more detailed discussions on the program.

The Indonesian minister voiced his optimism that this dialogue would serve as a stepping stone toward a strategic partnership between the two nations, particularly in infrastructure development and equitable urban transformation.

“At the end of the meeting, I extended an invitation to Minister Barbalho to visit Indonesia to explore future cooperation opportunities,” AHY concluded.
