Bulgaria to Host Opening Stages of Giro d’Italia 2026, Marking Historic First for the Country

Sofia, August 7, 2025 – The Europe Today: Bulgaria is set to host the opening stages of the prestigious Giro d’Italia in 2026, a landmark moment for the country’s sporting and tourism landscape. The announcement was made during a joint press briefing held at the Council of Ministers by Tourism Minister Miroslav Borshosh and Sports Minister Ivan Peshev, following Wednesday’s cabinet session.

According to Minister Borshosh, the Bulgarian government has endorsed the finalization of negotiations to bring the iconic cycling race to the country. He noted that Bulgaria had to outperform several other candidates to secure hosting rights. “This is a transformative event for the host country,” he remarked, adding that the Giro’s presence will greatly boost Bulgaria’s visibility on the global tourism map.

Minister Peshev echoed these sentiments, highlighting the race’s importance for the development of Bulgarian sport, international image, tourism, and infrastructure.

The 2026 edition of the Giro d’Italia will include three stages in Bulgaria, passing through numerous municipalities and showcasing various regions. Officials stated this would promote regional development and international exposure.

Although the final agreement — including routes, budgets, and dates — is still under discussion, both ministers expressed optimism that it would be finalized within two months. Once signed, the contract will make Bulgaria the launchpad of one of cycling’s most iconic events, watched by millions around the world.

This will be the first time in history that the Giro d’Italia begins in Bulgaria, marking a significant achievement in the country’s efforts to enhance its global profile through world-class sporting events.
