Jakarta, August 16, 2025 – The Europe Today: President Prabowo Subianto has announced that the government will allocate IDR757.8 trillion (approximately US$46.8 billion) for the education sector in 2026, marking the largest education budget in the history of the Republic of Indonesia.
The announcement was delivered during the President’s speech on the 2026 State Budget Bill and Financial Notes at a plenary session of the House of Representatives (DPR) in the Nusantara Building of the Parliamentary Complex in Jakarta on Friday.
“Education is an instrument to eradicate poverty. The government is committed to allocating 20 percent of the budget to education, which amounts to approximately IDR757.8 trillion for 2026 — the highest in our nation’s history,” President Prabowo stated.
He emphasized that the education budget must be carefully monitored to ensure its effective use, in line with the government’s priorities to enhance teacher quality and strengthen vocational education to meet the demands of the workforce.
From the total allocation, the government plans to expand access to education through scholarships under the Indonesia Pintar Program (PIP), targeting 21.1 million students from low-income families. Additionally, 1.2 million university students will benefit from the Kartu Indonesia Pintar (KIP), a government initiative providing financial assistance for higher education.
President Prabowo further noted that IDR150.1 trillion (around US$9.3 billion) will be allocated for improving school and university facilities across the country.
The plenary session was attended by 473 legislators representing all political factions, with DPR Speaker Puan Maharani presiding over the meeting. Also present were top government officials, including leaders of national institutions and ministers from the Red and White Cabinet. Among them were Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, Coordinating Minister for Food Zulkifli Hasan, Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati, and Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin.
