Azerbaijani Parliament Speaker Meets IPU Secretary General in Geneva

Baku, October 20, 2025 — The Europe Today: Speaker of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova, who is on a working visit to the Swiss Confederation, met with Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Martin Chungong on the sidelines of the 151st Assembly of the IPU in Geneva.

The meeting focused on current and prospective areas of cooperation between the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Inter-Parliamentary Union, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to enhancing inter-parliamentary relations.

Recalling their previous meetings, Speaker Gafarova and Secretary General Chungong highlighted the importance of regular dialogue in strengthening Azerbaijan’s engagement with the IPU and promoting shared parliamentary values.

During the discussion, both parties underscored that assemblies such as the IPU’s provide vital and effective platforms for addressing key global challenges, facilitating dialogue, and fostering cooperation among member parliaments. They also commended the IPU’s active role in deepening collaboration between national legislatures and advancing international parliamentary diplomacy.

The sides further praised the achievements of the Parliamentary Network of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), established at the initiative of President Ilham Aliyev, and acknowledged its growing institutional capacity and international recognition under the chairmanship of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis.

Speaker Gafarova reaffirmed Azerbaijan’s readiness to continue contributing to the objectives of the IPU and to strengthen cooperation in promoting peace, development, and multilateral dialogue through parliamentary diplomacy.
