Canada Calls for NATO Cooperation to Ensure Arctic Security Amid Greenland Tensions

Canada

Ottawa, January 19, 2026 – The Europe Today: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has called on NATO allies to ensure security in the Arctic through Alliance mechanisms, against the backdrop of escalating tensions surrounding Greenland, according to media reports.

In a statement posted on his X account, Carney emphasized the strategic importance of the Arctic for the transatlantic alliance. “The security of the Arctic—NATO’s northern and western flanks—is of paramount importance to our Alliance. Canada firmly believes that the best way to ensure Arctic security is by working together within NATO,” he wrote.

Carney said the Canadian government is concerned about the escalation of the situation in the Arctic region and will take steps to strengthen both military capabilities and critical infrastructure in the area.

He also reaffirmed Canada’s position on sovereignty and international law, stressing support for territorial integrity in all circumstances. “Canada supports the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity in all cases, including with respect to Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark,” the prime minister said.

Carney added that Canada’s long-standing position remains unchanged, underscoring that “Greenland’s future must be determined solely by Greenland and Denmark.”
