Vietnam

Hanoi, June 16, 2026 – The Europe Today: Vietnam has expressed its desire to expand cooperation with Canada in culture, journalism, science and technology, education, and training as both countries work to deepen their Comprehensive Partnership.

The remarks were made by Trịnh Văn Quyết, Politburo member, Secretary of the Party Central Committee and head of the Commission for Information, Education and Mass Mobilisation, during a meeting with Jim Nickel, Canada’s Ambassador to Vietnam, on Tuesday.

During the meeting, Quyết noted that the Vietnam-Canada Comprehensive Partnership has continued to grow in recent years across multiple sectors, supported by high-level exchanges and expanding people-to-people contacts. He said these developments have created a solid foundation for broader and more substantive cooperation in the future.

The Vietnamese official expressed hope that Ambassador Nickel would help further strengthen bilateral relations through practical initiatives aimed at enhancing diplomatic engagement and people-to-people exchanges during his tenure in Vietnam.

For his part, Ambassador Nickel praised Vietnam’s achievements following the success of the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam and the first session of the 16th National Assembly. He said these accomplishments provide a strong basis for sustaining growth in bilateral trade and expanding cooperation between the two countries.

Highlighting the large number of Vietnamese students studying in Canada, Nickel described educational and people-to-people exchanges as a key pillar of bilateral relations. He also pointed to productive discussions between the two countries on energy security, education, science, and innovation, noting that these areas offer significant potential for mutually beneficial cooperation.

The ambassador emphasized Canada’s strengths in science, education, and professional training, expressing his country’s readiness to share expertise and experience with Vietnam. He also voiced interest in enhancing collaboration with Vietnamese media organizations, particularly as news outlets around the world face increasing challenges from misinformation and fake news.

Quyết said Vietnam is implementing the goals set out in the 14th National Party Congress through a range of measures aimed at creating new drivers of development and achieving the country’s long-term national objectives. In this context, he stressed the importance of cooperation with Canada, especially in science and technology, innovation, and the training of officials at all levels.

Addressing cultural and media cooperation, Quyết highlighted Vietnam’s rich cultural heritage and the important role played by the country’s media organizations in promoting Vietnamese culture and introducing the nation and its people to international audiences.

He acknowledged that Vietnam’s media sector is facing growing challenges amid rapid technological transformation and said the Canadian ambassador’s proposals could pave the way for future cooperation between Vietnamese institutions and Canadian partners. Such collaboration, he noted, would help promote Vietnamese culture in Canada and strengthen bilateral ties through media and cultural exchanges.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation in areas of shared interest and enhancing the longstanding friendship and partnership between Vietnam and Canada.
