Baku, January 29, 2026 – The Europe Today: Georgian Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Tamar Ioseliani, accompanied by Lasha Abashidze, General Director of JSC Georgian Railways, met with Rovshan Rustamov, Chairman of Azerbaijan Railways, to discuss cooperation in the field of railway transportation, media reported.
According to the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development, the meeting focused on strengthening collaboration between Georgia and Azerbaijan to enhance the competitiveness of the Middle Corridor and attract additional cargo flows.
Special emphasis was placed on the official launch of the Baku–Tbilisi–Kars railway and the opportunities it presents for increasing cargo turnover. It was highlighted that Georgian Railways will hold exclusive rights to carry out freight transportation on the Marabda–Kartsakhi railway section.
The parties underlined that the agreement between Georgian and Azerbaijani railways is of strategic importance for national railway infrastructure and regional economic cooperation, as it will enhance competitiveness and bolster Georgia’s transit and logistics potential.
Following the meeting, Lasha Abashidze, together with Levan Kankava and Mikael Abasov, General Directors of BTKI Railways LLC, signed an agreement granting Georgian Railways exclusive rights for freight transportation on the specified section, the ministry’s statement confirmed.
