United States Resumes Diplomatic Operations in Venezuela After Seven-Year Hiatus

States

Baku, February 1, 2026 — The Europe Today: The United States has resumed diplomatic operations in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela after a seven-year suspension, marking a significant step in the restoration of bilateral ties, media reports said.

U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Laura Dogu arrived in Caracas on Saturday to reopen the American embassy, which had remained closed since February 2019 following the severance of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

In a post on the official U.S. Embassy in Venezuela account on the social media platform X, Dogu wrote, “My team and I are ready to get to work.” The embassy also shared photographs of Dogu taken after her arrival at Maiquetía International Airport.

Diplomatic ties between the United States and Venezuela were formally cut in February 2019 after Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro ordered the closure of missions in response to then-U.S. support for opposition leader Juan Guaidó.

The restoration of diplomatic operations follows ongoing dialogue between the two nations and is seen as a key development in efforts to rebuild engagement after years of strained relations.
