Damascus, February 2, 2026 — The Europe Today: Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa held a telephone conversation on Saturday with French President Emmanuel Macron, during which both leaders discussed recent regional developments and ongoing efforts to promote stability in Syria, according to a statement cited by the Syrian Arab News Agency.
During the call, President Al-Sharaa emphasized the importance of supporting the Syrian political process and enhancing stability across the country. The discussion also focused on the comprehensive agreement reached between the Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), with Macron expressing support for the deal and highlighting the need for its implementation in a manner that safeguards Syria’s unity and sovereignty.
President Macron reaffirmed France’s commitment to continued coordination with Damascus to assist Syria and its people on a path toward stability, justice, and reconstruction.
The agreement, announced on Friday, establishes a comprehensive ceasefire and phased process between the Syrian government and the SDF. Key provisions include the immediate cessation of hostilities, the phased integration of military and administrative structures, withdrawal of forces from contact lines, and deployment of Interior Ministry security forces to city centers in Hasakah and Qamishli in northeastern Syria.
The deal aims to unify Syrian territory, reinforce state authority, and advance full institutional integration through joint coordination, while also facilitating broader reconstruction efforts across the country.
This latest agreement follows previous attempts to secure peace. On January 18, the Syrian government and the SDF signed a ceasefire and integration deal, which Damascus later accused the SDF of violating multiple times. The renewed agreement came after a Syrian Army operation reclaimed significant areas in eastern and northeastern Syria in response to repeated breaches by the SDF.
