Washington, D.C., February 26, 2026 – The Europe Today: Swedish defenseman Rasmus Sandin made an immediate impact following the Olympic break, opening the scoring for the Washington Capitals in a 3–1 home victory over the Philadelphia Flyers.
Although Sandin was not selected for Sweden’s Olympic squad, he appeared refreshed and focused as NHL play resumed. With just over a minute remaining in the second period, Sandin capitalized on a well-placed pass from teammate Hendrix Lapierre. Skating in with speed, he controlled the puck briefly before finding an opening behind Flyers goaltender Dan Vladar to give Washington the lead.
The goal marked Sandin’s first home goal of the season and the first point recorded by a Swedish player in the NHL following the Olympic pause.
Washington maintained control to secure the 3–1 win, beginning the post-break stretch on a positive note as teams push toward the latter part of the regular season.
