PayPal

Colombo, May 16, 2026 – The Europe Today: On May 15, 2026 Sri Lanka marked a major milestone in its transition toward a fully digital economy with the official introduction of PayPal through integration with the country’s domestic banking system.

The official launch ceremony was held under the patronage of Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, who praised the collaboration between the local banking sector and PayPal as a significant advancement aligned with the government’s digital economy vision.

The initiative is being viewed as a transformative step in elevating Sri Lanka’s digital economy at both regional and global levels. Initially, the service will be made available through key banking partners, including Bank of Ceylon, Commercial Bank of Ceylon, and Sampath Bank, while additional banks are expected to join the platform in the coming months.

The integration will enable Sri Lankan consumers, freelancers, entrepreneurs, and emerging businesses to access a secure and globally trusted international payment system, facilitating easier cross-border financial transactions.

Officials stated that Sri Lanka’s digital economy agenda is focused on fostering inclusive growth, encouraging digital entrepreneurship, and deepening the country’s integration into global markets.

The expansion of international payment services is also expected to provide a major boost to the country’s small and medium enterprise (SME) sector, which contributes approximately 52 percent of the nation’s GDP. Improved access to international markets is anticipated to help SMEs become more active participants in global trade.

Authorities further noted that establishing a transparent and accountable global financial ecosystem would help address longstanding concerns regarding fraud and insecure financial transactions.

The government emphasized that the country’s youth are expected to play a central role in the digital transformation process, with future economic growth being anchored in principles of equality, innovation, and transparency.

Representatives from PayPal highlighted that Sri Lanka possesses a large pool of talented freelancers and entrepreneurs capable of meeting global demand. The partnership is expected to remove barriers related to receiving international payments and create a more efficient and reliable digital payment ecosystem.

Further details regarding customer access and service availability are expected to be announced by participating banks in the coming weeks.

The launch event was attended by Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe, Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka; Eranga Weeraratne; Dr. Anil Jayantha; Nadia Sayed; senior government officials; industry leaders; and representatives of participating financial institutions.
