Canada Summons Israeli Ambassador Over Detention of Gaza-Bound Flotilla Activists

Canada

Ottawa, May 21, 2026 – The Europe Today: Canada has summoned the Israeli ambassador following reports of the abduction and detention of activists participating in the Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla earlier this week, according to media reports.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney strongly condemned the reported treatment of civilians aboard the flotilla, calling it “abominable” and “unacceptable,” particularly in relation to footage shared by Israeli official Itamar Ben-Gvir.

In a statement posted on X, Carney said Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs has instructed officials to summon the Israeli ambassador to seek urgent assurances regarding the safety and security of Canadian citizens involved in the incident.

He further stated that Canada has already imposed strict sanctions on Mr. Ben-Gvir, including asset freezes and travel restrictions, in response to his repeated incitement of violence.

“The protection of civilians and respect for human dignity must be upheld everywhere, at all times,” the Prime Minister added.

The incident involves participants of the Global Sumud Flotilla, a civilian-led maritime initiative aimed at reaching Gaza amid ongoing regional tensions.

No immediate response from the Israeli government has been released regarding Canada’s summons.
