Capitals, June 24, 2026 – The Europe Today: Europe is experiencing one of its most intense early summer heatwaves in recent years, with temperatures exceeding 40°C across large parts of Southern and Western Europe. Authorities have issued urgent health advisories, restricted outdoor activities, and urged residents to take precautions to protect vulnerable groups.
According to French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, approximately 40 people have died over the past week while attempting to escape extreme heat conditions. He confirmed on Tuesday that up to 40 deaths, mainly due to drowning incidents, were reported since June 18.
Officials said many of the victims were “mainly young people” who entered unsupervised waters in an attempt to cool off during the scorching weather.
The continent is currently under the influence of an exceptional and record-shattering heatwave, driven by a persistent heat dome that is trapping hot air across much of Europe. In several regions, temperatures have reached the high 30s Celsius and in some areas exceeded 38°C (100°F), placing major cities under severe stress.
The extreme conditions have led to widespread disruption, including school closures and train cancellations across multiple countries. National weather agencies have issued urgent warnings as the heatwave continues to intensify.
France’s national meteorological service reported record-breaking average daily temperatures, while both France and Germany recorded numerous drowning incidents over the weekend. In France, authorities also confirmed the tragic discovery of two children found dead inside a car amid the extreme heat.
In Italy, officials have urged residents to avoid direct sun exposure and reduce strenuous outdoor activities during peak hours, while the United Kingdom’s Met Office has issued a rare red warning for heat beginning Wednesday.
Western European countries, particularly France and Spain, have been among the hardest hit as the heatwave continues to expand across the continent, with officials warning that dangerous conditions are likely to persist in the coming days.
