Berlin, July 21, 2026 – The Europe Today: President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and President of the Federal Republic of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier held an expanded meeting in Berlin on Tuesday, reaffirming the strong strategic partnership between the two countries and discussing regional and international issues of mutual interest.
During the meeting, President Frank-Walter Steinmeier warmly recalled his recent visit to Azerbaijan and described both Azerbaijan and Germany as “islands of stability” amid ongoing global and regional challenges.
The German President congratulated President Ilham Aliyev on the progress achieved in the Azerbaijan-Armenia peace process and praised Azerbaijan’s growing contribution to Europe’s energy security.
President Ilham Aliyev also fondly recalled President Steinmeier’s visit to Azerbaijan and highlighted the country’s expanding role as a reliable energy supplier to Europe, noting that Azerbaijan is now exporting natural gas to Germany and Austria in addition to other European markets.
The two leaders emphasized that Azerbaijan and Germany enjoy friendly relations and noted the considerable potential for expanding economic cooperation, trade, and business partnerships. They expressed confidence that President Aliyev’s current visit to Germany would provide fresh momentum to the further development of bilateral ties.
Underscoring the strategic nature of relations between the two countries, the Presidents highlighted the significance of the Joint Declaration on the Strategic Agenda for Bilateral Partnership between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Federal Republic of Germany, which is set to be signed by President Ilham Aliyev and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
The meeting also included discussions on Azerbaijan’s relations with the European Union, with both leaders recalling the visit of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to Baku and emphasizing the continued development of Azerbaijan-EU cooperation.
The two Presidents further exchanged views on the strategic importance of the Middle Corridor, recognizing Azerbaijan’s key role in advancing the transcontinental transport route, and discussed the evolving situation in the Middle East along with other regional developments.
