Geneva, August 05, 2026 – The Europe Today: A group of United Nations human rights experts has called on the Canadian government to take immediate and effective measures to protect Sikh activist Moninder Singh, citing credible threats to his life and raising concerns over alleged transnational intimidation targeting Sikh activists in Canada.
In a letter addressed to the Canadian government and made public this week, five UN special rapporteurs expressed concern over allegations of foreign intimidation and reprisals against Singh, a Canadian national. The experts noted that Canadian authorities have issued multiple “duty to warn” notices to Singh since 2022, informing him of credible and imminent threats to his life.
The UN experts urged Ottawa to take all feasible measures to ensure the safety of Moninder Singh and his family, while also accelerating investigations into the reported threats, bringing those responsible to justice, providing appropriate remedies to victims, and preventing similar incidents in the future.
The letter, dated June 3 and released under standard UN procedures, was signed by independent experts responsible for issues including human rights defenders, freedom of religion, peaceful assembly, and counter-terrorism. A copy of the communication was also sent to the Government of India. The rapporteurs emphasized that they act independently and do not speak on behalf of the United Nations as an institution.
According to the experts, the reported threats appear to form part of a broader pattern of alleged transnational repression targeting Sikh activists abroad. India has consistently denied allegations of involvement in such activities.
Responding to the UN appeal, Moninder Singh welcomed the intervention, stating that it underscored the need to safeguard the rights and security of individuals facing threats for their advocacy. He reaffirmed his commitment to peaceful advocacy and called for stronger protection of human rights and freedom of expression.
