Ashgabat, September 9, 2026 – The Europe Today: Turkmenistan has signed a protocol aimed at coordinating preparations for the upcoming meetings of the Council of Foreign Ministers and the Council of Heads of State of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), which will be held in the Avaza National Tourist Zone in October.
The protocol was signed following a meeting between Turkmenistan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Serdar Muhammetdurdyyev and Denis Trefilov, Deputy Secretary General of the CIS, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan on September 8. The two officials had met the previous day at the Avaza National Tourist Zone.
During their discussions, the sides reviewed current issues of cooperation between Turkmenistan and the CIS, with particular attention given to preparations for the meetings scheduled to take place in Avaza on October 7 and 9 as part of Turkmenistan’s CIS chairmanship in 2026.
The officials discussed organisational arrangements for the upcoming events, areas of cooperation and other issues of mutual interest.
The newly signed protocol is designed to ensure coordinated organisational and substantive preparations for the meetings of the CIS Council of Foreign Ministers and Council of Heads of State.
The upcoming high-level meetings in Avaza will be held within the framework of Turkmenistan’s chairmanship of the CIS in 2026, underscoring the country’s role in advancing cooperation and dialogue among member states.
