Baku, September 10, 2026 – The Europe Today: Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov has said that the historic Washington Summit marked an important milestone in the peace process and created new expectations regarding Armenia’s implementation of its commitments.
Speaking to journalists, Bayramov said the summit resulted in the adoption of several important documents and declarations, adding that Azerbaijan’s subsequent steps had demonstrated that a period of peace had begun for the country.
The minister noted that commitments outlined in the joint statement issued last year, as well as subsequent declarations by the Armenian side, had become increasingly evident.
Bayramov said that at a certain stage of negotiations on the peace agreement, it had been anticipated that the process could be finalized in August. However, he stressed that concrete steps, including constitutional amendments and the adoption of a new constitution in Armenia, were required to advance the process.
He recalled that similar positions had been expressed ahead of previous parliamentary elections in Armenia, while following those elections, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan reiterated that the constitutional process was expected to move forward by the end of the year.
According to Bayramov, the implementation of these steps has opened a new phase in the peace process and generated positive expectations regarding Armenia’s fulfillment of its obligations.
“Our approach remains unchanged. Opportunities still exist for the process to continue and for the peace agreement to be signed,” Bayramov said.
