China Urges U.S. to Cease Cyberattacks and Disinformation Campaigns

Beijing, April 16, 2024, The Europe Today: Amid escalating tensions over cybersecurity allegations, China has called on the United States to halt its cyberattacks and refrain from smearing China’s reputation, as highlighted by Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian during a press briefing on Monday.

The statement follows the release of a report titled “Volt Typhoon: A Conspiratorial Swindling Campaign Targets with U.S. Congress and Taxpayers Conducted by U.S. Intelligence Community,” jointly published by China’s National Computer Virus Emergency Response Center and the 360 Digital Security Group on April 15.

Lin underscored that the report categorically debunks U.S. assertions linking the Chinese government to cyberattacks attributed to “Volt Typhoon,” identifying the group as a ransomware cybercriminal entity self-identified as “Dark Power,” without state sponsorship.

Furthermore, Lin expressed concerns over alleged collaboration between the U.S. intelligence community and cybersecurity firms to fabricate evidence and disseminate misinformation, purportedly to secure increased congressional funding and government contracts.

Highlighting the global cybersecurity landscape, Lin emphasized that the United States remains the principal source of cyberattacks and represents the primary threat to cybersecurity worldwide.

Lin condemned attempts within the United States to exploit cyberattack attribution as a means to target and vilify China, asserting that such actions undermine China’s legitimate rights and interests.

In response, China calls upon the United States to immediately cease cyberattacks against China and desist from defamatory campaigns, urging a constructive approach to bilateral cybersecurity dialogue.
