Lisbon, August 17, 2026 — The Europe Today: Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has fuelled speculation over his retirement after indicating that the upcoming year could be the final season of his professional football career.
The 41-year-old forward, one of the most decorated players in football history, made the remarks in an interview with Vogue, saying he was preparing for what could be the final chapter of his playing career.
Ronaldo has enjoyed a career spanning more than two decades, representing Sporting, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus and Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr. He has won five Ballon d’Or awards and numerous major club and international honours.
The Portuguese star has also established himself as one of the most prolific goalscorers in football history. He has scored 976 goals for club and country and is approaching the landmark of 1,000 career goals.
Despite his remarkable achievements, the World Cup remains one of the major honours absent from Ronaldo’s collection. He represented Portugal at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which he had already indicated would be his final appearance at the tournament.
Ronaldo said he hoped to leave behind a “spectacular legacy” and suggested that life after football would include spending more time travelling, playing padel and enjoying the rewards of his long career.
The forward has previously avoided giving a definitive retirement date, but his latest comments represent one of his clearest indications yet that his playing career may be approaching its conclusion.
Ronaldo remains contracted to Al-Nassr and continues to play in the Saudi Pro League as he pursues the historic 1,000-goal milestone.
