Islamabad, August 21, 2026 — The Europe Today: The ASEAN Committee in Islamabad (ACI) celebrated the 59th anniversary of the founding of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) with a vibrant reception highlighting the spirit of unity, diversity, cultural heritage and shared prosperity among ASEAN member states.
The evening reception, held at a local hotel, was attended by representatives of the Government of Pakistan, diplomatic missions, international organizations, the private sector, civil society and friends of ASEAN in Pakistan.
The ACI comprises the diplomatic missions of Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Viet Nam. The celebration commemorated ASEAN’s establishment on August 8, 1967, and underscored the organization’s enduring commitment to cooperation, friendship, peace and shared prosperity among its member states and partners worldwide.
The reception was held under the ASEAN 2026 Chairship theme, “Navigating Our Future, Together,” reflecting the association’s continued commitment to collective efforts in addressing shared challenges and pursuing new opportunities in an increasingly interconnected world.
In his welcome remarks, Ambassador of the Philippines and Chair of the ACI, H.E. Dr. Emmanuel R. Fernandez, highlighted ASEAN’s longstanding tradition of peace, dialogue and cooperation despite the region’s rich diversity of cultures, languages, religions and political systems.
He also underscored ASEAN’s growing economic dynamism and openness to partnerships, noting the significant potential of its young, educated, creative and digitally connected population. He said these strengths continued to provide a solid foundation for deeper regional engagement and cooperation.
The celebration was also attended by Federal Minister for National Heritage and Culture H.E. Aurangzeb Khan Khichi, who conveyed warm felicitations from the Government and people of Pakistan to the governments and peoples of ASEAN member states.
In his remarks, the minister acknowledged ASEAN’s transformation over nearly six decades into a dynamic and increasingly integrated regional community of more than 700 million people, with a combined economy approaching $4 trillion.
He also highlighted the longstanding engagement between Pakistan and ASEAN and emphasized opportunities for further cooperation and interaction in areas of mutual interest.
A major attraction of the evening was the ASEAN cultural showcase, which featured the diverse heritage and traditions of Southeast Asia. The ASEAN missions in Islamabad established country booths showcasing distinctive traditions, crafts, products, national motifs and other cultural expressions.
The ASEAN Food Station also offered guests an opportunity to experience a wide variety of traditional and specialty dishes from across Southeast Asia, showcasing the region’s rich and diverse culinary heritage.
The cultural programme further enlivened the event with performances representing various Southeast Asian traditions, including traditional dances, martial arts and contemporary creative presentations.
The performances, country booths and food showcase demonstrated how ASEAN’s diversity serves not only as a defining feature of the region but also as a source of connection among its peoples and a bridge for greater understanding with international partners.
The celebration also highlighted the importance of people-to-people contacts in strengthening relations between ASEAN and Pakistan. Culture, cuisine, business, education, tourism and sustained engagement continue to provide opportunities for greater mutual understanding and friendship between the two sides.
The ASEAN Committee in Islamabad expressed appreciation to the Government and people of Pakistan for their warm hospitality and to the distinguished guests, partners and friends of ASEAN who participated in the celebration.
As ASEAN moves towards its seventh decade, the 59th ASEAN Day celebration in Islamabad served as a reminder of the association’s enduring strength and its commitment to finding common ground, strengthening partnerships and moving forward together.
