Olympic Tuesday Set for Blockbuster Events with Scottish Athletes in Focus

Paris, August 06, 2024, The Europe Today: The Olympic Games promise a thrilling Tuesday, with the spotlight on Josh Kerr’s highly anticipated showdown with rival Jakob Ingebrigtsen in the men’s 1500m final at Stade de France.

This could be a race for the ages, with Edinburgh’s Kerr aiming to become the first Scot since Allan Wells in 1980 to win an Olympic gold medal on the track. Fellow Scot Neil Gourley is also in the final, adding to the excitement of the event scheduled for 19:50 BST.

Kerr, who outpaced Ingebrigtsen to win the world title in Budapest last year, faces a formidable challenge from the defending champion. The Norwegian edged Kerr in the semi-finals, but both runners appeared to hold back, setting the stage for an electrifying final. Glasgow’s Gourley has quietly and efficiently reached the final after overcoming a series of injuries last winter.

In other Olympic action, Tokyo silver medallist Laura Muir starts her 1500m campaign in the heats at 10:05. Despite a challenging three years since the last Games, Muir broke her own British record at the Diamond League meeting in Paris a month ago, showcasing her return to top form.

Scott Brash, from Peebles, aims to double his medal tally in the individual show jumping final at the Palace of Versailles, starting at 09:00. Having already secured his second career gold in the team event, Brash and his horse Jefferson qualified in 12th place.

At the velodrome, Jack Carlin will compete in the team sprint, aiming to add another medal to his collection. The 27-year-old, who won silver in Tokyo, will race alongside Ed Lowe and Hamish Turnbull in round one, with the fastest four teams progressing to the medal races.

In sailing, Scotland’s Anna Burnet and her partner John Gimson continue their quest in the mixed Nacra sailing event. The Team GB duo, who won silver at the last Olympics, are in fourth place overall after Monday’s races off the Marseilles coast. The remaining three qualifying rounds take place tomorrow, with the top ten teams competing for medals on Thursday.

As the competitions continue, Scottish athletes are poised for potential glory, promising an action-packed and memorable day at the Olympics.
