Baku, November 12, 2024 – The Europe Today: The World Leaders Climate Action Summit opened on November 12 at the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Baku. President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres extended a warm welcome to heads of state, government officials, and other distinguished delegation leaders at the summit, according to media reports.
After the welcoming ceremony, attendees gathered for an official family photo to commemorate the occasion.
President Ilham Aliyev delivered a keynote speech at the opening of the World Leaders Summit, underscoring Azerbaijan’s commitment to advancing global climate goals. Following his address, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres shared insights on the critical need for unified global action. Maimunah Mohd Sharif, Mayor of Kuala Lumpur and Former Executive Director of UN-Habitat, also spoke, highlighting urban sustainability and resilience.
Adding an inspiring note, NASA astronauts aboard the International Space Station shared a special video message, emphasizing the view of Earth from space and the urgent need for collaborative climate action.
The event concluded with a cultural program, celebrating Azerbaijan’s heritage and symbolizing global unity in the fight against climate change.
