Ankara, December 4, 2024 – The Europe Today: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday evening, according to a statement from Türkiye’s Communications Directorate. The discussion centered on strengthening bilateral relations, addressing recent developments in Syria, and exploring broader regional and global issues.
During the call, President Erdogan reaffirmed Türkiye’s steadfast commitment to supporting Syria’s territorial integrity and emphasized the need for a fair and lasting resolution to the ongoing conflict. He stressed the importance of expanding diplomatic opportunities in the region and urged the Syrian regime to engage actively in the political resolution process.
“Protecting civilians is a top priority,” Erdogan stated, underscoring that Syria must not become a source of further instability. He reiterated Türkiye’s pledge to continue its efforts to restore calm and security in the region while addressing the humanitarian dimensions of the crisis.
Erdogan also reiterated Türkiye’s strong stance against the PKK terrorist organization and its affiliates, who have exploited the turmoil in Syria. He emphasized Türkiye’s determination to combat terrorism and safeguard its national security, aligning with the country’s broader efforts to protect its citizens and borders from external threats.
The phone call comes amidst heightened tensions and shifting dynamics in Syria, where Türkiye has been actively involved in military and diplomatic initiatives. Türkiye has consistently advocated for a political solution to the conflict while conducting cross-border operations to counter terrorist groups, particularly those linked to the PKK and its offshoots.
Both leaders have worked together on initiatives such as the Astana peace process, aimed at de-escalating violence and facilitating a political settlement in Syria. The ongoing dialogue between Türkiye and Russia underscores their continued collaboration on regional security and diplomacy, with a shared focus on stability and peace in the volatile Syrian landscape.
